Red Boat Wing Chun is known as Hung Suen Wing Chun. Hung Fa Yi is "Red Flower Righteousness" Wing Chun. I've trained HFY for a number of years now, TWC seems closer than other branches of WC but it still different from HFY by a substantial margin.

Hi Andy, is this club closed off to just JHU students? My email is healthovermind@yahoo.com I've taken Wing Chun before and I'm interested in continuing it. If you can let me know the specs on that, that would be great. Thanks, Antonio

IMHO, I find the stuff sold by Kiyota and WE to be pretty poor quality...but it depends if buyers are training seriously or not. For the casual student, they are probably sufficient...

What the principles mean to me

Over the time I have trained in Wing Chun I have come to think of it as simply this: A method to remove chance from a striking match. I have come to resent the popular mma adage: a puncher's chance. On the other hand, I know this saying is well founded. When you put two amateur strikers in a ring together, both of them clash together like a couple of stags. Predetermined combos flying, the winner is usually decided by the stronger, faster, more athletic, or more determined opponent. If you watch fights with great champion strikers (styles aside), the win is much less often decided by that chance contact between a fist and chin - which is why these guys are champions. I think the founders of Wing Chun wanted to systemize a way to reduce or remove chance from a fight (ie take combos out of the equation). After they had a goal, the principles then followed naturally - most significantly economy of movement and interruptability. Its easy to reject a lot of this stuff as dogma when you first start, but after several years in training I've come to realize many of the above principles on my own as truth.

Red Boat Wing Chun is also known as Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun. HFY seems a bit cultish, but if anyone actually manages to train with a class, it will be interesting to see similarities/differences with TWC.

Hey! Just dropping in and saying hi. I miss you guys. I was walking by a US Kuoshu studio on my way to lunch yesterday and a bunch of ppl were filing out, and I really wanted to just jump in front of them and yell, "Come on! Fight me!" But I didn't. I got a tuna sub instead. In my defense, I was wearing strappy platform sandals, which, for all you guys, would be as easy to fight in as a straightjacket. But I haven't completely lost my Wing Chun. I've had a few occurrences where a friend has come up behind me and playfully poked me or something, and he ended up on the floor, before I even realize that I'd reacted. (And by a few occurrences, I mean two.) :)
And for all of you to whom it has not been made clear, no I do not own a bunny costume. And even if I did, I wouldn't wear it to practice. Hmmm... unless I got paid to do it.

Hey Dinah, Long time no see! How are you doing? We're having sparring sessions every week on Saturdays in the fall, so if you want to keep those deadly skills well primed, you should drop by and join us some time. It'll be great to have you around : )

Ah, now I see where you are coming from. But don't forget that with the pak sao, at least you still have your wu sao to back it up.

Heh, putting it bluntly, without committing at least 6 months of regular hard training to learning the wing chun basics to near perfection, you have no chance of being proficient in this style...

Hey Andy, It's too easy to make changes without signing in, I keep forgetting! Maybe it would be a good idea to restrict editing to logged in members only?
