What's a Jam sau. quit with the modified speak :). I think I disagree - I suppose it depends on how close you get in for the pak sau and how well you deflect the strike. I personally find the traditional pak sau strike (with opposite hand) difficult to pull off in a full on sparring match. I like the same hand deflection striking - and have found the bil sau srike (same hand) useful against non wing chun fighters. Anyways, all seriousness aside how goes it Carl?

Hey hey Mark! Long time no hear! How are things? Busy here with work and training. I took Andy to a JKD training camp with Ted Wong and Dan Lee a few weeks back, that was great fun, learnt a few tricks here and there. Training here in Frederick is good, the group has grown and I am introducing basic drills as a prelude to sparring. I'm testing for an Instructor's belt with Randy in a few weeks, so I have to get my head down and study for that. I've heard that you've been focussing on BJJ lately? Sounds fun...one of the CRCA instructors trains with Vitor Belfort, might be training with her in a few months as she said she wants to come down to the next seminar. Another of our guys trains with Royce Gracie down in VA, we keep meaning to pop down and see them again soon.

Yeah I'm living, working, and training in Danbury, CT. JKD? Craziness. I've always wanted to see how they train. About a month ago I started BJJ classes with Luigi Mondelli. There's a lot of camaraderie at this school. Its also an American Top Team branch, so if I ever want to do some amateur fights, I have an in. Apart from becoming familiar with the ground, I'm really benefiting from the amount of conditioning we do. In a few months I won't be such a fat ass. We need to get some more Hopkins guys in this thread. Seriously though, what is a Jam sau? I forget.

Hey, sounds great fun, bjj is a real good work out, good luck with going into comps, would be great experiences for you! Heh, I'm trying to tempt Dinah back into training, seeing as she is still around Baltimore, no luck so far...JKD involved a lot of boxing, and the footwork would be a bit crazy for TWC stylists, but yeah Ted Wong was fast, and this was after recovering from surgery too. The jam sau is the movement from the double chop (and return) into the double tan sau in the second section of the SLT. That way, your hand is already in a position to strike (from tan position to punch), a much more economical movement than punching from pak sau (IMHO). Do you find this valuable? |

Ah, now I see where you are coming from. But don't forget that with the pak sao, at least you still have your wu sao to back it up.
